Mom Loses Kid for Obesity

I have to argue a point with what I am sure is a well-meaning columnist who believes in the sanctity of family and thinks that more often than not children should be with their parents.  I do as well…up to a point.  What is this all about you wonder?  Well, an article I read on CNN by Ruben Navarrette Jr. called “Taking Obese Child from Mom is Wrong.”

Is it really?  Is it really wrong to say that to a mother whose child is morbidly obese, weighing more than 200 pounds at 8 years old?  Well, according to Ruben it is, because he feels that the child protective agency (CPS) overstepped their bounds.  They should have done some other form of intervention besides placing the kid in foster care.

But, Ruben and all who may be reading, there is a problem with what that line of thought.  He admitted in his article that the state gave this “mom” a full year to get her ass in gear to start feeding her kid with some sense.  They gave her the tools such as pediatric input on what and how to feed her child appropriately and instead of following the guidelines SHE MADE THE CHOICE to continue his 4,000 calorie a day junky, eat what you damn well please, garbage can lifestyle.

How the hell is this not abuse?  It tells me that she didn’t care enough for the life of her child when the doctors and everyone else informed her of the life threatening issues that were imminent if she failed to help him.  And she did just that, FAILED to help him by choosing to continue allowing him this garbage in system she created.

No one would have a problem if this mom were consistently feeding her kid a meager sustenance of 400 calories a day and doctors called CPS and alerted them that a kid was being starved and that health concerns were imminent.  But CPS was called when in this case when the “mom” took her son to the emergency room with trouble breathing.  That should have told the dingbat that he had some serious issues coming down the road.  Wouldn’t Ruben and everyone else say that the mom was neglectful for not allowing her child to eat healthy?

So, why is it okay for this fool to abuse food just as the starvation mom abuses food, to harm her child?  Whether you starve them or stuff them, you are doing something with food that has dire medical consequences for the child, all of which are bad with some being particularly life threatening.  We are not talking about a case of a couple snack cakes here and there or a cookie before dinner.  We are all guilty of that or something similar.  Hell, we are talking about a lady who allowed her kid to eat 4,000 calories of food in a day.

Does anyone know what it takes to eat 4,000 calories a day?  Most athletes don’t eat that much, save for the swimmer Michael Phelps.  And look how he exercises.  She was negligent just as much as the starvation mom.  She needed her kid taken so that he may have a chance at health.  And she still has a chance to get herself together enough to learn the proper way to feed children, herself and her family.

Let’s stop looking the other way on things like this.  He would be up in arms if the story wasn’t about the boy being taken for obesity, but being the youngest kid to die of a heart attack due to obesity.  No one would say, it was no one’s fault that an 8 year old died due to his cholesterol filled arteries.  We all would be beside ourselves with disgust as we all should be now.  And allowing anyone to blame it on ignorance is just plain ignorant.  There comes a point in time when all of us know that eating ten big macs a week just isn’t a good thing.  Consuming two boxes of cereal every morning is ridiculous.

So Ruben’s attempt at sympathy for a stupid mother isn’t going to fly in my book.  Just as sympathy for a stupid mother who didn’t realize that reusing dirty diapers was a bio-hazard that would cause flaming diaper rash, or the stupid mother who didn’t think that playing video games instead of feeding her kids was a big problem, would be unthinkable.  So should sympathy for this unfit, unhealthy, unthinkably dumb mother.

United’s Not So Friendly Skies

A United Flight Attendant Modeling New Uniform

A United Flight Attendant Modeling New Uniform

So now United Airlines wants to charge what they term “obese” passengers with a double fee for flying their so called friendly skies. I guess those skies aren’t so friendly for those who are a bit on the heavy side. I guess I have a few problems with these companies and restaurants etc trying to charge or ban those who are overweight. And it is simply because it is very subjective. Who is going to be in charge of making that decision? Are they going to bust out of the back and embarrass the person in front of everyone and have them step on a scale in order to confirm.

That doesn’t sound friendly at all. Not to mention are they going to also make a stinky person tax. I have actually had to sit next to a guy who was stinky as all get out and that was on United. I guess they only care about their passengers comfort in that they don’t have their space invaded by a fat person. But could care less if other are around you with their crying babies, stinking bodies, loud talking, ugly looking, over perfumed/cologned and otherwise invasive behaviors.

They have never cared for your comfort before and this is no bigger a problem then any of the other things I’ve mentioned. If they REALLY cared for my comfort then they would find a way to allow me to bring my own freaking food and drinks on their lame ass planes. Snatching someone’s sealed Snapple isn’t going to make me any safer, trust me.

I mean being in the medical field I know that there is a LOT of disorders, diseases and medications that have the side affect of weight gain/obesity. And are those people going to be made to pay for something that they have NO control over? And if that is the case are people who are extremely skinny or anorexic going to be able to get their tickets cut in half since they are taking up the space of only half that of a normal weight passenger.

Hell where does it end? What about pregnant women? They can be considered overweight as well. How about body builders they also are considered over weight due to weight/height charts. This is a big can of worms they really shouldn’t want to open. Because to me this is just a small leap from charging Muslims or black extra because they are more likely than others to disrupt the plane in some way. When more than likely it is the little old lady next to you who will complain about any and every thing no matter what or how small.

I guess we can now expect to step on the scale at the airport or be subjected to a game of guess the fat person’s weight by United Airline ticket counter workers. How about we just save a lot of time and trouble and amend the constitution to say that overweight people be banned from airlines altogether? Oh boy we are quickly becoming a nation of people who just has to find someway to subjugate the next guy, no matter how ridiculous the case.

To Eat In Mississippi Just Step On The Scales

anorexic2pl.jpg

You might have heard the news that a Mississippi law maker wants to pass a law making it illegal for restaurants to serve food to clinically obese people. How stupid is this? I can understand wanting to help people lose weight because I am all for controlling issues of weight and any other unhealthy problem people may face. It doesn’t matter how unhealthy you are as long as you aren’t obese.

What I don’t like is the fact that they are going to go on looks alone to base this law. How about the skinny person who has a cholesterol level of like 350 and is sliding towards a heart attack shouldn’t they be kept from the trough as well? They are just as or unhealthier than the obese person yet it is OK as long as they are skinny. No matter that the plate of greasy burger and fries is the last straw and he or she walks out of the restaurant and drops dead of a heart attack. Who should be to blame for this?

What about the bulimic person who may be thin but due to the binging and purging they are extremely unhealthy. Should the restaurant not be helping to feed this unhealthy eating disorder by supplying them with the food they want to binge just so they can go home or somewhere else and purge it out somehow? Is the restaurant supposed to be able to deny helping them become even unhealthier even though they look normal and healthy?

Should the tanning shops now deny tans to those super tanned individuals who are ruining their skin and will undoubtedly have skin cancer in the future? Should every industry that might be aiding and abetting some behavior that could possibly lead to unhealthy outcomes be charged with regulating the persons partaking in it? What about football and the Super Bowl? They just came out with statistics that show that people are prone to stress related heart problems from watching the games. Should we now have a health screening for those who wish to watch the game live or in a pub etc.?

The problem is we can’t regulate what people do when it is legal for them to do it. This law maker is making a lot of assumptions about the people who are obese. The assumption is that the people are fat due to chronic over eating and that is it. What about the people who have glandular problems such as PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and endocrine problems such as thyroid conditions, parathyroid, pancreas, adrenal, pituitary and hypothalamus problems, diseases such as Cushing’s disease and lastly a plethora of certain drugs such as antidepressants and anti-seizure just to name a couple.

Yet we are going to trust whether or not a person is just a fat slob who is killing themselves with food to some waitress, waiter or greeter at a restaurant. The bill was authored by Senator W.T. Mayhall, Jr. Now this senator supposedly has a background in medicine which makes me ask the question how he can make such a stupid bill which certainly won’t help. At best it will be another way to subjugate people, obese people.

America’s Killer Diet

Overweight kids with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, what is going on with the food choices in our community? We are eating more processed foods than ever or what CNN is calling “America’s killer diet.” Over the last ten years portion sizes have ballooned up as fast as our waistlines. Just twelve years ago you had an obesity rate of 1 in 6 adults where now 2/3 of people are obese. And this is now spreading down the ladder to our children. We have the benefits of stores stocked with foods of all types yet we are malnourished compared to those living in the Caribbean who is eating fresh produce, seafood and meats daily.

What has happened to family dinner time that now the majority of it is now provided by Ronald McDonald, Colonel Sanders, a White Castle, the King or a little red headed girl named Wendy? Our diets are riddled with sugars and oils high Omega 6 such as in seed oils and soybean oil which are linked to disorders such as depression, high cholesterol, suicidal thoughts and even criminality. A lot of the foods that say lite, diet and sugar free are loaded with these oils and sugars. In an average week most people consume more than 3 pounds of sugar through soda, candy, sugar added juice, cereals chips and any other processed food items.

The calorie content in most of the meals that we eat out at restaurants or our favorite fast food joint is about one to two thousand calories and that is per meal. This is pretty much the total amount of calories most people need in a day all consumed in just one meal. Along with this meal a person is going to eat at least two more meals, a few snacks and drinks which all undoubtedly will be full of fats and sugars. This has become the norm for part of society where vegetables are seen with disdain and French fried potatoes are now the vegetable of choice. But we do eat our vegetables, what about the salad bar where we gobble up salads in which we slather ranch dressings and toppings such as bacon bits, cheese and nuts, making this just as fattening as eating a couple slices of full topping pizza or hamburgers.

Cooking has become a thing of the past. A lot of people complain of not being able to cook or not knowing what types of foods would make a healthy meal. This could be because with the growing need for a second income our mothers are now in the workplace keeping them from being home with their children teaching them how to prepare proper meals. People also complain that they don’t enjoy healthy foods due to a lack of taste etc. Knowing what comprises a healthy meal and one that is tasty is as easy as a trip to you local library. There are cookbooks and recipes that can help to deal with our lack of knowledge with cooking good healthy foods.

In the Black community we are getting away from our roots and eating more fast food than ever before. We have made choices to allow our children to make their own food choices and consume candy, fast food and processed junky foods on a daily basis. A few of us want to put the responsibility from our actions on others and sue fast food restaurants as if they brought the food to us and forced us to consume it. What good is a lawsuit if you aren’t going to live long enough to do anything with the money? It is our responsibility to make sure that we consume the correct types of foods.

People constantly say that soul food is contradictory to healthy foods and that is just not true. We can eat healthy and tasty it is all a matter of choice. Sure Blacks are known for having full figured bodies, but somewhere along the way people took that to mean overweight bodies, just more propaganda that we have to deal with in the Black community. Taking pride in having a healthy body should be a priority that we as adults can pass down to our children breaking this pattern of food abuse.

We have to understand the health risks that obesity brings to us, our families, children and community. Starting healthy eating clubs or having healthy eating classes at the community center might be some options. We should also start getting the exercise we need to go along with our new found healthy lifestyles. Taking a little time to ensure that we have a handle on our health seems like a no brainer since the majority of us out here are lacking quality health care. Since health care is a problem keeping ourselves as fit as possible will surely help to offset this and many other problems.
