Are We Americans Really This Stupid?

Moron

I think it’s high time for me to do a little bit of venting.  I have been pretty much silent on the health care debate but listening to NPR today just really made me angry.  I practically screamed all the way from our house to Grandma’s pad.

They were talking to people who watched the President speaking about health care last night and what they thought about what he said.  Well there has obviously been a resurgence of crack usage that seems to have escaped the throngs of news reporters who were so quick to let you know about its usage in the black community.

Anyway, a lady was complaining about the fact that the President wants to make it illegal for insurance companies to use pre-existing conditions to deny coverage.  She likened it to having no car insurance even though it’s mandatory then wrecking into a tree and running to Geico and yelling for them too cover you quick.

Now this lady was obviously so high on crack that she sounded like a total idiot.  We all know that there isn’t one way in hell that any insurance company would cover that situation because coverage starts the minute you sign on the dotted line, not retroactively so it doesn’t quite fit this problem.

We know for a fact that insurance companies are NOT denying coverage to people who sat around with no insurance even though they could afford it purely for no reason.  Who got cancer and then said I better go get health insurance to cover this.

Nope, what the President is talking about is this bullshit about people having bogus pre-existing conditions that somehow should preclude the insurance company from paying any further claims even though they have been collecting the person’s money religiously.

What he is talking about would be the fifty year old man who has just gotten a diagnosis for osteoarthritis and the insurance company denies his coverage because when he was ten years old he stubbed his big toe and needed a band aid from the school nurse.  This is the preposterous crap that happens day in and day out.

And to tell you the truth, this idiotic lady will be the first one to cry, holler and scream that things aren’t fair when, not if, but when this happens to her and/or her loved ones.  I have seen this game all too often as I’ve worked at two insurance companies and I’ve worked at countless hospitals.

This isn’t a game, it is real, it happens and it is practically criminal already.  Either they need to be forced into giving the person the care they PAID for or giving them a full refund on their premiums, including those paid by the person’s job.

I guess since this lady hasn’t had to be one of those affected adversely by her insurance company she can stand to sit around and make idiotic comparisons about a real life travesty.  When are people going to think outside of the doggone box?  It doesn’t take much to do some critical thinking.

I believe that our school system has failed so many.  And it seems that their parents didn’t bother to pick up the slack in teaching critical thinking skills either.  Are we American’s really this stupid?

Tea Party Or Pity Party

cincinnati-tea-party

I haven’t felt much like talking about politics since the election. But, this tea bag business has got me fuming and I feel the need to vent to all of you. I don’t have a problem with protest as to me that is what makes one a good citizen. Letting the powers that be know when you are unhappy with a certain treatment or behavior that needs changing.

But the problem I am having with this tea bag bullshit is that it makes no sense. Where were all these people with their tea bags and signs when Bush was getting us into this mess? Are those crickets I hear chirping in the background? I guess they were too busy calling everyone unpatriotic and then telling them to support our president to do any protesting.

I have seen signs that people have their children holding saying things like “Obama is spending my future earnings.” OK, I can go with that. But where were these people and their children when Bush was running up the deficit to astronomical amounts for the last eight years? Were they too busy reaping the benefits of all those tax cuts for the rich? Oh, that’s right these are the fools who don’t make over 250 g’s. They are the ones who make minimum wage but feel that the trickle down effect Bush tried will work if we give it adequate time.

I know that these people don’t really believe that this economic fiasco just started the day Obama got into office. And I know damn well that these are the same people who if we go by their signs and let free market reign, will be crying about their lost job. Help me government. That is exactly what they would be running around saying if we allow businesses to just start going under. Now don’t get me wrong this is exactly what I wanted. Let them go down and take these losers with them.

But the problem is now, that we have a bunch of people with selective memories who feel that somehow everyone can keep their jobs, we can fix our infrastructure, fix our health care, fix our school system, continue two failed wars, make up for the housing, stock and financial markets crisis all while giving everyone or at least the rich a free ride on taxes. Not to mention cut business taxes and allow them to have offshore tax shelters.

How does any part of this plan or non-plan make any sense to anyone at all? This is utter idiocy. But, isn’t that the same idiocy we have seen out of these jackasses for the last eight years? What are they proposing that is different than then? They actually have built a following of nuts by telling them we need to continue the failed plans of the last eight years in order to repair the damage of the last eight years. UH, WHAT? Can you run that by me again?

And if that isn’t enough, they still seem to be following and listening to a back alley junky (Rush Limbaugh). What is wrong with these people? I don’t know if Obama will succeed and I don’t know if he is on the right path. But the one thing I DO KNOW is that we can’t continue the last eight years of stupidity. As that is what we KNOW is the wrong thing.

*SIGH* Can’t we just put aside the petty crap for a couple of years and try to patch up the tears and rips that Bush and his clowns put in the fabric of our society.  Which makes me wonder if this is a tea party with real background or just a pity party aimed at crying over the loss of power.

Holding On To Racism

19japskeepmovin

I received a reply from a fellow named Charlie on my post “Kids will be kids unless they are black.” He said “It is far too easy for the black community to blame the negative view some white people may hold of blacks on racism, rather than taking a long hard look at the real causes of such ill feelings…” Now of course this got me to thinking about blame and negative views of different races.

What I commented back to him was the fact that not only blacks have a negative view from people around the world. White people have just as bad a reputation as black people. Now sure I will agree that blacks have been more maligned as most of the world is run by white people some of which seem to have no problem spreading hate about blacks the world over.

He wants to claim that blacks are holding on to racism instead of taking this long hard look at themselves or whatever. Has he or anyone who thinks as he does, ever taken a good long look at white people and their connection with racism? Black people aren’t the only ones holding on to racism.

In America the Native American, Hispanic, African American and Muslim are or have complained of racism at the hands of the white race. The Aborigine in Australia, blacks in South Africa, minorities in France, the UK, Italy, Ireland and just about any place with a minority population has or is complaining about racism by white people.

Is this some horrible case of mistaken identity or some colossal conspiracy that all these races have felt racially maligned by white people? Charlie wants black people to take a hard look at the real cause of such ill feelings all the while acting as if the white race has been nothing but accommodating and welcoming to those of other races.

This is by no means an accusation of the entire white race as being racist. This is just a reply to an idiot who also said that “Sadly the black community in the West only seems to re-enforce these stereotypes, then blame white people for thinking the worst of blacks.” And the way I see it, some in the white community only seem to reinforce the stereotype of white racism, then blame black people for thinking the worst of them.

So instead of people like Charlie always making each and every point they make about black people being filled with stereotypes of them being criminally inclined, future less high school drop outs, why don’t they try and go back even further. The reason they don’t is because it blows a big hole in their entire argument of blacks being somehow completely and utterly responsible for all of their bad press, bad conditions and everyone’s crime problem.

Charlie said that white people should have a higher crime rate and he is right white’s should have a higher conviction rate than blacks but they don’t. Why doesn’t he ask why? Why doesn’t he read the DOJ’s study on how the judicial system in America is biased? Why he doesn’t just look at the fact that if you are constantly profiling people by race and that race doesn’t include white people, they are going to get away with more crimes than the next person. It doesn’t mean they don’t commit crimes.

It is the same with the white kids drinking from my last post. If they were to go ahead and arrest them for these crimes, no matter how simple someone feels this crime is, the numbers would rise. If they were to spend the amount of time on fashion faux pas in the white area as they do in the black areas their numbers would rise.

And according to a 2005 study by the Justice Department found that while Hispanic, black and white drivers were stopped by the police about as often, Hispanic drivers or their vehicles were searched 11.4 percent of the time and blacks 10.2 percent of the time, compared with 3.5 percent for white drivers. I guess you think that this is an accident? And maybe, just maybe if they searched white people’s cars at the rate they do for Latinos and blacks they would be carting a bunch of them off to jail.

Data collected from state courts by the Justice Department also shows that a higher percentage of black felons than white felons receive prison sentences for nearly all offenses, and also that blacks receive longer maximum sentences for most offenses.  So like I said people need to start looking beyond the silly little stereotypes.

He claims that the black/white crime disparity shocked him.  What he should be shocked about is the fact that him and those like him want to play down, discount and overlook any and all racial disparity that exist in favor of this phony everybody is equal and somehow blacks are just doing everything wrong. Sometimes Charlie and those like him, racism plays a bigger role than any of you wishes to admit.

Unemployment Numbers Gone Wild

unemployment.jpg

The news was touting the new unemployment figures for which they reported was at about 5%. Which they then said was still a historical low. Yet can we really trust these numbers? We know that the fortune 500 companies like to “cook” the books so to speak but what about the government are they “cooking” the books when it comes to things such as unemployment, gross domestic product and the consumer price index. With the government playing fast and loose with the numbers we could be closer to a depression than any of us actually know.

When the government compiles the data for unemployment they count the people who are drawing unemployment checks currently. According to John Williams “Real unemployment right now — figured the way that the average person thinks of unemployment, meaning figured the way it was estimated back during the Great Depression — is running about 12%. Thus the government is actually not counting people who have exhausted all of their available unemployment benefits nor people chronically unemployed stated to be at five million people.

Most people think that we are doing a lot worse than the numbers tell us and they are right. The lying doesn’t stop there they are also flubbing the numbers on gross domestic product in such a way that Williams talks about something called “imputations” which are “an outgrowth of the theoretical structure of the national income accounts. Any benefit a person receives has an imputed income component. If you’re a homeowner, the government assumes that you pay yourself rent on your house, so that’s rental income. … Imputed interest income, for instance, accounted for 21% of all personal interest income in 2002, and was growing at an annual rate of over 8%. Meanwhile, fully 62% of total rental income that year was the imputed variety.”

Williams points out that “folks really aren’t doing that well, which is why their incomes aren’t growing, which is why they’ve borrowed money.” People are going to be borrowing more money and thus getting into even more trouble. It looks pretty dismal to me yet I have seen this coming for a while now. It was said in the article that “Our financial condition is a ticking time bomb. What none of us knows is when it implodes.” Right now people are buying and practically living on credit. Yet, trying to convince themselves and others that they are living well just because they have a lot of material goods. These people are living on borrowed money and time. As we just heard that the dismal dollar is on its way down and who knows where or when it will stop.

This materialistic lifestyle that we have been getting sucked into, all too willingly, by the big business of advertising and marketing is what is driving this credit era. Businesses are spending millions if not billions to push their wares on hungry consumers. Apple has marketed the hell out of the IPOD even though the price of these things is out of control and not nearly worth it. People are paying thousands for computers that can be bought for hundreds. Yet this doesn’t stop people because it is no longer about the money, it is now about the wow, look at me factor. People aren’t buying a thousand dollar pair of shoes because they are the most comfortable and lasting. Nope, people buy these shoes because they can say “hey, I can afford a thousand dollar shoes, look at me.”

At this time of the year when spending on the holidays is probably putting some people into the poor house or at least out of a house all together, we are just as unconcerned as ever. What is it that we are teaching our children with this irresponsible behavior, that they can spend willy nilly and not have to worry about whether or not they even have the money? Just get a credit card and all your troubles are gone. The fact that people are getting these credit cards is in actuality just the beginning of all your troubles. We don’t have any credit cards and we don’t want any. We have had our share don’t get me wrong, but we can now see that it is the quickest way to burying yourself in the long run.

People are living pay check to pay check and still want to live the life of royalty. All the while these people are sucking in the propaganda that the nation is doing so much better like little hoover or dust busters. The government is banking on the fact that you will continue believing this tripe and helping to perpetuate our precarious situation by doling out the credit cards whenever you get the inclination to do so.

The Propaganda of A Ron Paul Supporter

templ5.jpg

I received a reply from a reader that it seems has a totally opposite view of things than myself. Instead of returning a reply I felt that this comment deserved its own post. The reply is from H.R. who seems to constantly have this totally condescending attitude when talking with me. I am not sure whether this is personal or just his arrogant egotistical attitude. He has referred to my mind as being a sad little tiny place, I am also brain damaged and intellectually crippled.

Instead of exchanging barbs I will try my best to get my point across to you as well as H.R., who starts us off with “Government is an agreement among free people. Do you get that? A set of rules agreed upon by a set of people. Not a separate entitiy from those people. It’s when you start thinking of government as some all powerful being that’s going to take care of you and fight your battles and right all wrongs that you set yourself up to be controlled.

YES, I understand the principle of government and who and what it is for. That was the point I was trying to make to H.R. in a previous reply. He previously said that “No, the system didn’t “encompass” slavery … Blacks weren’t defined as people protected under the system. In other words, it was a mistake of definition, not in the nature of the law. Think of it as a monopoly game. The rules are the same for everyone, but the hard fact is that you weren’t allowed to play for a while. Now you can play, but because you’re bitter about being excluded you wan’t the rules slanted in your favor ..” Now when I spoke to him previously I used the term system to mean government.

H.R. can’t sit and now claim that the system never encompassed slavery. If the “system” never encompassed slavery then exactly who did? The system DID encompass slavery as it was institutionalized which meant that the act was given authority and by who if not the system or government. Yet H.R. would like for us to believe that somehow slavery didn’t involve the system who were the government who were the people.

Back to his comment about government, the operative word in his definition is FREE. When the government or system was set up we were NOT a free people so therefore had no such agreement. Now that we are supposedly free, the SAME government that deemed us as NOT free has not changed, they are not some new entity who entered into a new agreement with us. So what does a people do when the system or government or those free individuals making agreements with the government is dominated by a race of people who one – don’t respect them, two – started out denying them and continue to do so and three – don’t protect or acknowledge their rights whatever you deem that to be.

You can’t, if you want to have principles, allow racial issues to influence your philosophy of government, any more than you can have special rules for short people, ugly people, people with IQs under 90, etc. At what point do you stop dividing people and taking from one group to make up ground for another group? It’s a slippery slope.

Racial issues are and will continue to dominate our country due to the unwillingness of the dominating populace to see the hypocrisy in its actions. One group gets special treatment, is and was allowed to take from the other for the entire duration of their relationship and NOW H.R. would like for us to stop dividing people. I don’t know where he is going with this. I would like to know at what point do we stop dividing people and how do we even the playing field after one group has and continues to benefit so heavily from the divisions they created.

You have no larger concept of government except that it was created by whites so it must be a plot to perpetuate white privilege … This is a truly ignorant stance. You know what else was created by whites??? Nearly every staple of your life. The computer you’re using, the light over your head, the internal combustion engine in the car you drive … Was all of this done to perpetuate white privilege? Please tell me.

The government being created by whites is not the problem. The government being created as a means to advance white people at the expense of all others IS. The only ignorant thing is that people can actually think that a system of government was enacted which encompassed the subjugation and slavery of another race is not inherently set up to perpetuate the ruling race’s status.

Thanks for the history lesson on inventions, but how about some of these. Pretty much every staple of YOUR life as well as mine has its roots in Africa. Africans pioneered mathematics, medical practices not rooted in myth or magic, metallurgy, building with brick and mortar, and astronomy. Now you thank an African American for open heart surgery, refrigeration for trucks also trains, gas masks, elevators, air conditioner, refrigerator, Cell phones, fire extinguishers and the computer system you use today with its working bus and peripheral capability. Are these plots by the black race to show that they are productive citizens and worthy of being equal?

These things were introduced as a matter of progress–as is the ever changing system of government in Western society. Political philosophers have never been preoccupied with race…. read what they have to say. Thomas Paine, who was responsible for inventing the American approach to government, was a destitute undergarment maker who came to America with nothing, never had much, and died with nothing. He was also outraged by slavery and was one of the first Americans to take a resolute stand against it.”
“The American system was a bold innovation, and was, and is, the fairest form of government to date … If you study history you’ll see that ours is the least prone to class distinctions and abuses of power; the germ of it was, as I’ve said, conceived of by a poor man who had been kept down and got the shit end of government his whole life. (I’m talking about the Constitutional Republic we’re supposed to have, not the quasi-socialism we have now.)

That is such a crock of bull! We have a system that says it is OK to discriminate, let people die as opposed to giving them healthcare, pay for war as opposed to caring for the children, sick and elderly. We are as corrupt as they come and are no better off than any socialist, communist or dictatorship. We are just bamboozled into thinking we are. We are NO more free, happy, healthy or rich. Again we are just bamboozled into thinking we have the best system on earth.

It’s pretty egocentric to assume that the framers of our government spent any time thinking of blacks …. The hard truth is that blacks were thought of as chattel; as property and nothing more. The system wasn’t designed to keep blacks down any more than it was designed to keep wagons or beasts of burden down

H.R. is abso-freakin-lutely right our grand old forefathers NEVER spent one second thinking about the black population. Because they DIDN’T MATTER! The system was designed to keep whites UP not blacks down, since they were already there. They had NO inclination that slavery would EVER end. So it wasn’t a matter of writing anything that had to take them into account. So, now how exactly was this government set up to give blacks the same rights as whites again?

So let’s be perfectly frank here, and tell me where I’ve got it wrong:
Blacks came literally out of the stone age into an intensely mechanized and complex civilization. They had not developed the wheel or a written language, and this was at the time that Newton was inventing modern physics, and even later, at the time that Edison was inventing the electric light, moving pictures, recorded sound for christ’s sake …. This was what, 2000 years (?) after practically every other racial group had conquered the seas, built ingenious sailing vessels and could navigate their ways around the world …

Is he joking! Blacks in Africa had the first Universities, even Plato had to go to Africa for a University education. We had the first medicine not rooted in magic. They were doing surgery with tools that those of today mimic. We had societies with government and rule of law. Africa had construction techniques such as brick and mortar, Metallurgy, irrigation, aqueducts and plumbing. We had civilizations so complex money was not even necessary not to mention thank them for the mathematics and writing utensils used today such as paper and pencils. There are tons of things coming from Africa yet I am sure that since he is coming from a white propaganda background he has yet to do any research in this area. He is not necessarily racist for this thinking just ignorant.

Please tell me, am I being a racist for pointing this out?

The point is, it’s totally intellectually irresponsible to say that blacks had it hard simply because whites have plotted to keep them down. You say the white race “did this to them” which is laughable …. First off, black chiefs were well involved in rounding up and selling other blacks. Secondly and most importantly, for whatever reason–and I’m not making any guesses, just dealing in the facts–black Africans had simply not advanced while most of the rest of the world was going forward at breakneck speed.”

It is irresponsible to say that blacks had it hard simply because whites have plotted to keep them down which is laughable. Of course blacks had it hard because whites were plotting to keep them down. If they didn’t plot against blacks then how does H.R. explain the KKK, Jim Crow, Slavery and all the persistent discrimination and racism that has continued even today? I totally agree that blacks were involved in the slave trade. Jews were involved in the holocaust, America trained Bin Laden and Al Qaeda to fight the Russians, so NOW WHAT? Are the Jews responsible for the holocaust, is America to blame for 9/11 and is this assertion supposed to make slavery OK now.

Black Africans were ruling Northern and Southern Africa which were going at breakneck speed living in civilized communities, writing history, building structures, cultivating crops and domesticating animals all the while the only thing stirring in Europe were drawing stick animals on cave walls. Does that sum up what I think of his guess?

H.R. definitely needs to take a course on African studies before you begin your little guessing game. It is pretty ignorant to make assumptions that blacks i.e. Africans are so pitiful and backwards. Yes the African continent has been trashed and usurped by many violent outside forces like the French, Dutch and British. If anything the problem Africa had is that it wasn’t VIOLENT enough to get rid of these people before they did so much damage. Now they are a group of fledgling nations trying to start again with all that they were wiped away by years of subjugate outside rule. Yes they have problems but, these nations are mere babies and will need to figure out what they are doing again.

Just being perfectly realistic, do you think Westerners could confront men of any color who did not have the wheel, a written language, clothes, etc., who could only make simple stone tools–and say “these men are my equals?

Answer that for me.

The answer to this is that H.R. definitely needs to take a few African history classes. The wheel was invented in Africa. He is so pompous about the white race or the western culture he belongs to that he actually think that everything was made by the western world. While the western world was making stone tools Africans were making tools and medical equipment from metal. Also they made scalpels and other cutting devices out of obsidian which western doctors are reverting back to. They were making replicas, jewelry and tools out of gold and mining diamonds and other stones.

And if clothes are the key to being civilized; then maybe the horrible monsters that enslaved a nation of people were just wearing the wrong things. So I am sure that with all the advances that the civilized African man had over the westerners did not cause them to see them as less than equals. But then again, the Africans didn’t attack nor try to enslave the Europeans when they met them, I am sure they were treated well just like the natives treated them when they landed in America.

Yet I am sure that none of that made any difference to H.R. as he is too far gone down the road of racist propaganda that he obviously has no interest in what really went on in Africa before the meddling of others. Africans were not these pathetic no bodies that he would like to paint them out to be. Racists usually can’t get their heads around the fact that all life originated in Africa and that the first civilized societies, with a lot of the modern day inventions that one likes to attribute to the western world.

On the whole, you need to recognize historical realities, and recognize that there’s a larger pattern of events. You’re a pretty severe racist because you’ve been duped into believing that everyone hates you because you’re black, and that everything’s a plot against you, and that history proves this. History actually proves nothing of the sort–only that your racial group was at an extraordinary disadvantage and suffered for it.

The thing that I and hopefully the other readers will recognize is that H.R. demonstrates the basic thinking of a racist who denies being one. He constantly alludes to the fact that Africans and their American counterparts are looked at as less than whites for all types of propaganda laden reasons. When H.R. says I’ve been duped I wonder if he means duped by me looking at the slavery, the systematic racism, the discrimination, the killings by lynching, police abuse, deaths, hypocritical justice system, wage discrepancies and the blatant disregard of ALL things that blacks or Africans have ever done, discovered or ever accomplished. Then yes by all means I have been duped.

“I’m sure when you come to terms with this and can separate petty emotions from your contemplation of government, you’ll arrive at some sensible conclusions.

Thanks for the discussion. I’ll look forward to your response.

It is easy to see that the ONLY conclusion that I could come to that would make any sense to H.R. would be to whatever he would and become a sheeple just like him and those like him. Unfortunately I can’t and won’t buy into H.R.’s propaganda and nonsensical thoughts on things. Yet I will let all of you the readers come to your own conclusion on this guy.

Does Affirmative Action Hurt

cartoon3.gif

As I receive a plethora of comments for my posts about Ron Paul I have noticed a theme to the ones that talk about affirmative action. Somehow people are equating affirmative action with some sort of hand out or some sort of mandated free job system for all these unqualified opportunistic blacks who don’t deserve to have them. Now I personally equate these comments to racist mindsets. I feel this is due to the fact that if they didn’t already feel that blacks were unworthy of the jobs that they do receive.

Now what exactly makes these people think that the blacks are getting jobs that they aren’t qualified for? I have never nor has anyone I know ever been able to fall into a job that they were not qualified for. This is just more racist thinking that many have and refuse to acknowledge as such. I have repeatedly asked these people to explain why these blacks are unqualified or how and where these jobs were gotten.

With the thinking that no blacks are ever qualified this is contrary to the truth. Blacks getting jobs usually have to be twice as qualified as the next person in order to get the jobs they are going for, affirmative action or not. Just like one commenter said, blacks have to work twice as hard to prove to whites that they are worthy. I have to laugh that people are so quick to judge all blacks as unqualified even though they don’t know the qualifications of just a hand full of any particular blacks.

So from what they are saying, blacks just want a handout, that we should be shamed to be given something for nothing. When did trying to get a job become wanting a handout? Is it a handout when white people are applying for a job, of course not because it is accepted that they would be qualified for any job they apply for. Yet they turn right around and tell me of the racist nature of affirmative action.

When has anyone ever talked about the affirmative action that whites receive? All the while blacks were kept from the workforce due to Jim Crow and other racist programs aimed at preserving white domination in the workforce. Why are they not complaining about all the white women who are benefiting even more from affirmative action than any black person?

We have been led to believe that all the while whites have benefited from their own brand of affirmative action it is somehow now a problem when there is a program aimed at someone other than white males. We as blacks should somehow be ashamed that someone was trying to come up with something, anything that would even the playing field between white males and minorities even though it is woefully inadequate.

I understand that people feel that this is nothing more than a handout that disenfranchises white males. Because we all know that white males have such a hard time finding jobs in this white male dominated marketplace. By all accounts if affirmative action is this big job handout program there really shouldn’t be any unemployed black who have applied for more than one job. Since if the jobs are being handed out the first one they applied for would be theirs no questions asked. Yet we know full well that blacks or over represented on the unemployment lines.

Should we believe this is due to the fact that blacks somehow don’t want jobs? Even these free handout jobs that they don’t even have to be qualified for. I suppose that I should just clear the air and let people know that the Eddie Murphy movie Trading Places was a joke. Black homeless people really aren’t being snatched off the streets and thrown into the lap of luxury running a stock brokerage firm. Yet this is what comes to mind when some people talk about how blacks are receiving these handouts in the form of employment. Or the fact that they are saying that blacks are not qualified yet they got the job at the expense of a more qualified white man.

Affirmative action is a catchall phrase referring to laws, customs, and social policies intended to alleviate the types of discrimination that limit opportunities for a variety of demographic groups in various social institutions. And for us to believe that these laws, customs and social policies are hurting people you would have to first believe that the playing field for all people is an even one. Yet if you believe that then you would need to explain a whole slew of other problems facing our society. Such as blacks only earn 78% of what whites earn, blacks are still under represented in all facets of corporate America and black unemployment is more than double that of white unemployment.

These discrepancies between blacks and whites are just the tip of the iceberg. There are tons of other “documented” differences that can’t be explained away with blacks just don’t want to do better etc. A person named Ana who replied to my Blog once said “what group? white people are not a ‘group’ that has some special, common interest. white people are individuals whose foremost concerns is their own good and the good of their families and friends – not the good of other white people.

This is exactly my point if every white person is doing what Ana said, whites are looking out for the concerns of their friends and families who happen to be white like them. This is the epitome of the white privilege or white affirmative action of which I speak. And for Ana to say this is showing her protection of the white group and how they do come together to protect the group Yet a black person having affirmative action which is a suggestion of sorts that if they are most qualified for a position they will not be passed over merely for the color of their skin. But the facts show that this so called suggestion has no real teeth. Blacks are constantly passed over and this is due to the ingrained thinking that most whites have that blacks are unqualified, unworthy and thus undeserving of whatever employment they are seeking.

Some of my favorite shows come on channels like the different Discovery Channels, TLC, Food Network, HGTV and Animal Planet. I just love those Meerkats. Anyway, I was looking at a show that I do watch often called Little People Big World and thought about the fact that this show and pretty much every other on these channels was about whites, featured whites or had white hosts. Now I am sure that they have little people who just happen to be of color, yet by watching this show you would never know it. They not only don’t have any on the show, they don’t chronicle any the way they do others on the show. Wouldn’t it be interesting to find out how a little person of color has to deal with life having two things to be discriminated for, being small and of color?

I know that people wonder why this even makes a difference to me; it does because with all the people out here on these Blogs saying that blacks should stop whining and work hard and they will benefit from society just the same as whites. Now am I to believe that there is NO hard working or interesting blacks out here that might deserve or be interesting enough for a show. So I guess hard work doesn’t help in this case. Since how hard does one have to work in order to fall into a job where you are just telling people about someone else’s dirty jobs, not much I am sure. It seems all one would need is a great personality and an ability to communicate well. And I would hope that people aren’t saying that no other race besides the white one can produce people with these characteristics as that would be extremely condescending.

Are these channels racist or are they just clueless to their black viewers? Yet, when I visit their websites they prominently show advertisements with black faces smiling brightly. So it is clear that they understand they have black viewers so I am forced to acknowledge that they are discriminating. They won’t give us a television show, yet they WILL sell to us indiscriminately. White mindset people won’t understand why this is a big deal and undoubtedly say that there aren’t any shows featuring blacks because the blacks didn’t do anything that would get them a show or we or other minorities just aren’t interesting enough. Interestingly enough I heard this exact argument when another Blogger asked why only white women are shown on network news when missing and a white commenter said that it was because the white women’s stories are so much more interesting than any minority would have. But, in fact half the shows on there could be hosted by anyone, black, white, Asian etc. I watch the show Little People Big World, now were there NO equivalent black family, how about Hispanic little people or Asian little people?

Are there no black or other minority people that own tattoo parlors that they could chronicle? Why don’t they have black people or more minority cook’s who are able to lead a cooking show on the Food network? Unfortunately what is being portrayed to blacks of all ages who watch these channels is that they are not worthy of doing any of these positive shows yet we will undoubtedly be over represented on some trash like Hot ghetto mess or America’s most wanted or some other show that might as well be called Black on Black crime at its finest. And yet here we are, and I am as guilty as the next person, watching these channels, keeping them going by giving them higher ratings with my viewing.

Asking are these channels racist, of course, they are just propagating more white privilege by pushing the white mindset on those in the minority communities. Even if they did put a black person or other minority on these channels it wouldn’t matter since this person would be just another white person with whatever ethnic skin tone they are being portrayed as. What I mean by this is that the black person they pick will be so assimilated that they will seem like a white person in black skin. I understand that this is the only type of blacks who make it on television set aside for the mammies and buffoons that make it in big Hollywood.

Yet as we can all see that these channels are overwhelmingly blatantly white you will still have people telling me and others that racism is dead or that it is pointing out racism that won’t let racism go away. Now I don’t know about them but I don’t think that by me pointing out the lack of minorities on these channels it makes them hire even MORE whites while ignoring the blacks and other minorities until it’s time for advertising. Yet will any of my complaining change anything for these channels? Since these are the same people who are operating on this theory of a color blind society as long as we don’t complain that the only color being represented is white. So until we are all respectful enough to realize that whatever race I identify with is not the ONLY race that matters then maybe we will be able to have all people represented when we sit down with our families and turn on the television.
