Is The Riot A Black Characteristic

riots.jpg

After reading a few Blogs this morning one struck me with talk of rioting and if Barack Obama doesn’t win blacks will undoubtedly start rioting in the streets. Now I personally don’t feel that this is anywhere near correct. Also, there have been fingers pointed at the Kenyan riots as showing rioting just may be a characteristic related only to blacks. Blacks albeit will lash out when the stress of life’s circumstances are too much to bear and things explode like a powder keg in a Bar B Q pit. The talk of blacks and our supposedly rioting as some sort of black trait or some kind of example of the lawless nature of blacks then we must look at the act of rioting as it applies to whites.

As riots go white riots have been around since they came to America. Black riots got a running start in the 60’s and have been on the radar ever since. As I did some research on riots it seems that white people in race related riots destroy the property of blacks etc. Yet, the majority of white riots destroy their own things since they usually happen around schools or major sports events. Blacks started off destroying the white owned businesses but then degraded into destroying their own homes, stores and general community. This is a direct result of having the police come down far harder on blacks than whites during a given riot. Since the black community felt so helpless and forgotten that when rioting breaks out the looting begins.

While doing a bit of research on riots and those that have been white or predominantly so I have come across a lot of riots where the idea of the riot was just to terrorize blacks and destroy what little they had. The riots were always after the gossip of some black man or men after their white woman whether it is for rape or just any type of relationship. The next reason was the fact that blacks had a nerve to actually get jobs to support their families. For people to make statements that rioting shows that blacks can’t control their angry violent nature and are prone to mass violent outbursts is totally irresponsible and an outright lie. Following is stories of a few violent white riots followed by a list of others, as H. Rap Brown said, violence is as American as apple pie.

The Springfield Race Riot of 1908 was a mass civil disturbance in Springfield, Illinois, USA sparked by the transfer of two African American prisoners out of the city jail by the county sheriff. This act enraged many white citizens, who responded by burning black-owned homes and businesses and killing black citizens. By the end of the riot, there were at least seven deaths and US$200,000 in property damage. The riot led to the formation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a civil rights organization.

The Atlanta Race Riot of 1906 was a mass civil disturbance in Atlanta, Georgia, USA which began the evening of September 22nd and lasted until September 25th. At least 27 people died and over seventy were injured. Atlanta newspapers reported that black men were assaulting white women. The charges were not true, but the reports set off the Atlanta race riot of 1906. The official death count was 12 black and two white, but it has been claimed the real death toll was much higher as Atlanta authorities did not want to further damage the reputation of the city. The riot was reported in newspapers around the world but has not been taught in schools in the United States, and those who died have not been officially commemorated.

East St. Louis, in 1917, the United States had a strong economy boosted by World War I. Because many workers were being recruited for the war, firms also had jobs for African Americans, who began to migrate in great number from the South to St. Louis, among other northern and midwestern cities. Three thousand white men gathered downtown, and started to attack African Americans. They destroyed buildings and beat people. On July 1, a black teen that shot his attackers was fired on by a white mob. The boy then shot and killed two cops.

The next morning, thousands of white spectators who saw the bloodstained automobile marched to the black section of town and started rioting. After cutting the hoses of the fire department, the rioters burned entire sections of the city and shot inhabitants as they escaped the flames. Claiming that “Southern niggers deserve a genuine lynching,” they lynched several blacks. Guardsmen were called in, but several accounts reported that they joined in the rioting rather than stopping it. Others joined in, including allegedly “ten or fifteen young girls about 18 years old, who chased a black woman at the Relay Depot at about 5 o’clock. The girls were brandishing clubs and calling upon the men to kill the woman.” The renowned journalist Ida B. Wells reported in The Chicago Defender that 150 black people were killed during July in the rioting in East St. Louis.

Red Summer which included riots against blacks: 1919 – Charleston Race Riot, May 10, Charleston, South Carolina, – Washington, D.C. Race Riot, July 19, Washington, D.C., – Chicago Race Riot, July 27 – Aug. 2, Chicago, Illinois, – Knoxville Race riot, Aug. 30, Knoxville, Tennessee, Longview Race Riot, Longview, Texas, Omaha Race Riot, Sept. 28, Omaha, Nebraska, Elaine Race Riot, Oct. 1, Elaine, Arkansas. Was called the red summer for all the blood of blacks that was spilled during this massive onslaught of race motivated riots that happened to take place in 1919 over one summer.

The Tulsa Race Riot, also known as the 1921 Race Riot, The Night That Tulsa Died, the Tulsa Race War, or the Greenwood Riot, was a large-scale civil disorder confined mainly to the racially segregated Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA in 1921. During the 16 hours of rioting, over 800 people were admitted to local hospitals with injuries, an estimated 10,000 were left homeless, 35 city blocks composed of 1,256 residences were destroyed by fire, and $1.8 million (nearly $17 million after adjustment for inflation) in property damage. Officially, thirty-nine people were reported killed in the riot, of which 10 were white.

The actual number of black citizens killed as a result of the riot was estimated in the Red Cross report at around 300; making the Tulsa Race Riot the worst in US history. Other estimates range as high as 3,000, based on the number of grave diggers and other circumstances, although the archaeological and forensic work needed to confirm the number of dead has not been performed.

Rosewood was a small community of 25 to 30 mostly black families in Levy County in central Florida, USA. Today, it is best known for the racially driven attack on African Americans by whites in January 1923, known as the Rosewood massacre. The town was abandoned during the massacre. It had been a “whistle stop” on the Seaboard Air Line Railway, located on the north side of State Road 24 half a mile east of the intersection with Levy County Road 345.

Thanks for this information. I too have read articles stating that rioting would take place if Obama loses as if we are all single minded and don’t think for ourselves. From what I understand many of us are just now considering that he would actually stand a chance at winning the white house and as a result have decided to support him.

  3. H.R.

I would think blacks would riot if Obama did win, since he won’t lift a finger to stop the War on Drugs–the most overtly racist policy in our current society, responsible for how many thousands (hundreds of thousands? Millions?) of black men rotting in prison for victimless crimes?

Obama on the issues? Milquetoast. Noncommital:

*Do not lower drinking age from 21 to 18. (Sep 2007) [who cares]
*Smokes cigarettes now; smoked some pot in high school. (Feb 2007) [who cares]
*Admitted marijuana use in high school & college. (Jan 2007) [who cares]
Deal with street-level drug dealing as *minimum-wage affair. (Oct 2006) [substantative? doubt it]
*Understand why youngsters want to use drugs. (Aug 1996) [really? who cares]

Bunch of smoke-blowing from an establishment hack.

Now, take the hardcore racist’s stance on drugs:

*Repeal most federal drug laws; blacks are treated unfairly. (Sep 2007)
*Inner-city minorities are punished unfairly in war on drugs. (Sep 2007)
*$500B on War on Drugs since 1970s has been a total failure. (Sep 2007)
    *Legalize industrial hemp. (Jan 2007)
*Voted NO on military border patrols to battle drugs & terrorism. (Sep 2001)
*Voted NO on subjecting federal employees to random drug tests. (Sep 1998)
*War on Drugs has abused Bill of Rights . (Dec 2000)
    *Legalize medical marijuana. (Jul 2001)
    *Rated A by VOTE-HEMP, indicating a pro-hemp voting record. (Dec 2003)

    (from issues2000.org)

Gee, all Paul would do would be to release legions of blacks–and others but primarily blacks–who were falsely imprisoned due to unconstitutional laws … not to mention save the next generation of victims of this racist, fascist legislation …

Off topic … But hoping to steer you back on course in case you were fooled by Obama’s tan.

As for the topic, as a reader of history, it has never crossed my mind that riots were peculiar to blacks. I’ve often said that if I were black I would organize an army to save my people from the US gov, and I can certainly understand why blacks would riot with the treatment they receive under modern American economic policies and the obviously slanted laws.

But if they’re suckered into voting against their own best interests by race baiters, how can this stop?

  4. H.R.,

I can’t say that I am glad to see you but anyway, what makes people think that all blacks care about is the stupid war on drugs or some black men who are in prison? Sure black men are in prison for drugs etc. but so are others.

Hey did you know that blacks aren’t the only drug dealers, drug fiends and whatever else can be attributed to drugs. Also, do you really think that blacks want “legions” of black prisoners flooding into our neighborhood’s. Sure that is great, just what we ALL want.

You know wage disparity hurts blacks, what is Ron going to do about it? Cops with their contagious shooting hurts blacks, racial profiling and plenty of other things hurt blacks. The war on drugs is just ONE.

Also, you would gather an army, sure and get ALL blacks killed on sight. Ok, good plan. Blacks have tried to get things together yet the propaganda surrounding them are immense. See black panthers. Or do you think they were a terrorist group who just so happen to want to feed, clothe, educate and protect the black community?

Trust me their is NOT one person running for president who has our best interest at all. So it doesn’t matter who you choose they will all keep the status quo, even Ron Paul. Blacks are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

  5. H.R.

Jesus, thanks, after the back and forth, for finally putting your defeatism and bitterness in concrete terms. So I guess the question is, why bother?

You’re totally ignorant on the nature of the war on drugs and the prison industrial complex. It’s a renewal of slavery and a form of legal genocide … The CIA is documented as trafficking drugs, and we all know these drugs end up in black communities. And those who aren’t destroyed by the drugs are destroyed by the laws that, for instance, make crack more criminal than regular coke. A white cokehead gets his bail paid and goes home. A black kid who uses crack will go directly to jail, and probably for a long time. Ron Paul’s the only one who will stop the whole thing–not, let’s be clear, because he’s particularly fond of blacks, but because he’s adamant about the government’s limited role in a free society.

And this is not to mention the cultural destruction that comes when backward drug kingpins are lionized, instead of intellectuals, family men, etc., and the poisonous effect this has on black youth and black families.

Blacks are systematically destroyed by federal programs. This could be changed and would make a tremendous difference–probably the most significant difference for blacks since the programs were begun. It would also lessen shootings by cops, because these shootings are a by-product of the criminal image forced on blacks by the war on drugs, etc. And let me just say, I’m not implying that I believe all drug dealers are blacks, I’m saying this is the brand they receive, due ultimately to federal government programs.

Re the black panthers: I wholeheartedly believe in the determination of the this group to take their own destinies in hand, but I think the movement has to be intellectually based … From what I’ve read, Malcolm X was pretty much on the ball in his rejection of help from others, and his encouraging of blacks to stand up and create their own realities outside of the white system (and by that I mean the white ECONOMIC system, not the Constitution–which, in strict legal terms, merely protects their rights as individuals) and white culture.

If blacks adopted his attitude, and if the federal gov got out of the way, there’s no question in my mind that they could compete, and even outperform, other groups.

  6. H.R.,

I finally agree with you on something! WOW! Actually I agree that if blacks would start thinking like Malcom X we would be far better off.

Anyhow, I understand that the war on drugs is set against the black community. But, the justice system as a whole is set against us as well. So maybe he should overhaul that as well. You should read my post called Color Me Bad https://theblacksentinel.wordpress.com/2007/08/28/color-me-bad/

All I am saying is that blacks problem with the war on drugs is just one of numerous problems with the government etc. I am not saying that we have no vote. I am saying that Ron Paul says these things yet we ALL know that he can’t do any of it without Congress and the Senate.

So talk is talk and we have to look at the big picture. He may say “some” things that folks like, yet what about the horrible things that are totally offensive. I can’t just look the other way on that.

    Thanks

  7. H.R.

The answer is principles. I say horrible things too, right? In my opinion, you say horrible things and bear a grudge against me without knowing me, merely for my skin color. But we can agree on the principle that I don’t have a right to your property or your earnings, and I don’t have a right to restrict your thought, travel or speech … And vice versa. This is the overarching principle of our system of government (as it was designed)–personal liberty. Ron Paul is pretty hardcore on that, if you haven’t heard.

I’m not trying to convert you to the man, but the philosophy that centralized government power is dangerous. It opens the door, for whoever happens to have that power, to destroy lives on a massive scale. If you don’t trust the white establishment–and I don’t either–then be aware that any other candidate is going to increase that establishment’s control over your life.

And that establishment tends to destroy black lives most aggressively, whatever nice face it tries to put on its programs. You can’t have black kids thinking like Malcolm X when they’re conditioned in public schools not to read or even have critical thinking abilities; when their communities are fragmented by the war on drugs and various unconstitutional laws … That’s why I say, if I was black, I’d be too pissed to sit still. I’d be getting my people together to take control of their children and their communities from the federal government.

  9. Got any white riots within the last century?

  10. Algebra Answers,

Just look at the pictures at the beginning of the article. That’s not a Ford Model T those white people are trying to turn over. Look at the list of instances that are given in the article. Did you even read it?

    Peace

  11. Bob,

Unfortunately I didn’t post your stupid comment because you failed to show those thousands of black riots.

I showed only a fraction of the white started riots. So why don’t you show all of us the list of black started riots. You can’t that is why. I do my research buddy, you should try it as well.

    Thanks but no thanks.

  12. Jo,

So does your mom, but the plethora of dudes don’t seem to be complaining.

Thanks for letting me know about your mom.

  13. Anon

“…black man or men after their white woman whether it is for rape or just any type of relationship.”

PROTIP: Rape is not a type of relationship. Consider rephrasing.

  14. Anon,

The intent of the post was not to say that rape is a relationship. But that what I was saying was that white people tended to riot and for any perceived relationship between a white woman and black man. That relationship could be consensual only to be construed as rape. It was a relationship non the less. There didn’t have to be ANY familiarity between the white women or black men and a riot would still ensue. The focus of the article isn’t on black male with white female relationships as it was on phony reasons to riot in the white community. All the while pointing the finger of disgust at so called black oriented riots.

    Thank you
