Focusing On The Symptoms

Police Shot

I was reading the tag surfer when I came across a post talking about how racist the Obama’s were and what they thought about Lovelle Mixon. In case the name isn’t familiar, he is the man who shot four police officers in Oakland recently. Now I could care less what these people think about Obama and his wife. If they feel he or they are racist, oh well. The problem I have is that these people are so gung ho on talking about how terrible this incident is.

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t advocate killing cops. In fact I don’t advocate killing anyone no matter what they have done. My problem is that these people could care less that Oscar Grant was just gunned down by police officers in Oakland. They even had the nerve to say that the incident wasn’t race related as if white men all over America are being gunned down by the cops without committing any crimes whatsoever.

Has it crossed anyone’s mind that maybe Lovelle Mixon saw four cops coming towards him and freaked, flashed back or just put two and two together and decided to get them before they got him? Hey you never know! Anyhow, my problem is that when a cop gets shot and god forbid a black man does the shooting; everyone gets their panties all in a bunch. Now it is a terrible thing when a person gets gunned down in the line of duty.

But one problem that I have is that a lot of the time police acts like some sort of rouge gang themselves. I am not saying that ALL cops are dirty, but enough black men get shot walking home from grocery stores or out on their pre-wedding night than ought to. Now I am sure that accidents such as this happen. But like I said it seems to happen to black men way more often than any other. And personally I am surprised that this type of thing hasn’t happened sooner.

I am NOT advocating people killing cops due to perceived or real incidences of police abuse. I have to keep reiterating these things because I will get a slew of comments where I am accused of being for cop killing or some other stupid thing. Now my point is that when you continue to abuse someone they will eventually be conditioned to act first. It is just like beating a dog; eventually that dog will see a hand and bite it. Same goes for the black and white community. We have been abused so much that no matter what the incidence blacks more than likely will see it as racism. We have been conditioned.

And now that this conditioning is coming around to bite the cops in the ass, people want to perpetrate this surprised I can’t believe you would think that way act. When are we all going to learn that you get out of something what you put into it. Cops constantly beating and killing young black men will only teach those young black men to bite when they see cops, especially when they are in numbers. I know that I am totally afraid that a gang of cops will harm one of my male family members. I won’t lie, I teach my son that he needs to be aware of groups of cops, and they can’t really be trusted. And that is a shame.

I should be teaching my kids that the cops are our friends. But they have showed me that this isn’t the case. I have had several uncles, cousins and even two aunts beat up by the cops. And in all but one case my relative had done NOTHING to bring that upon themselves. When the cops slapped and put my aunt in a headlock I was shocked and hurt. They never apologized and had the nerve to say that blacks all look alike and that is why these things happened. It showed me that being black and innocent meant nothing to those thugs. At that moment I came to understand that officer friendly we met in school didn’t really exist or at least never seemed to show up in the black neighborhoods.

The only thing I can say about Obama is that he agreed to take responsibility for the economy and the mess made by big businesses shabby dealings. But will he agree to take responsibility for allowing these cops to infect these young men with the disease of hate and fear? Will he champion for a cure or will we continue to react on a case by case basis as if the symptoms are not related to the disease. Unfortunately I doubt that he will take any stand on anything that infects the black community yet will continue to focus on the symptoms and not the disease.

Color Is Not Culture

rs-21_03-7

i am a mixed man (black and white) I have to disagree witht the article about “not seeing color(whts wrong with being white)” and i’ll tell you why. Im light..almost white, and strangely my brother is as black as coal, i would like to state there is no great difference between us. Now for nmy main point. It is stupid to ramble on about there not being enough “black” products on the market because only 12% of the people in america are “black”. Therefore if you are a business, you are goin to make more money by selling toys, beauty products, and bandaids that look “white”. this has nothing to do with racism.

I guess I don’t know how people read these things into my blog posts. But, I don’t recall saying that there is anything WRONG with being white. What is wrong with being black that we have to settle for being represented by white things such as toys, band aids etc.? Shouldn’t I have the OPTION to use things geared towards myself?

That is where you are wrong; it has EVERYTHING to do with racism. I never said that companies had to focus their entire product lines to blacks. I said that they should at least make some, SOME of their toys other races to fit other needs. It isn’t as if I said they had to build new factories. All they have to do is add more color to the dye of the plastic and that ain’t much.

Now if we had the same attitude towards murder you wouldn’t be on board with it. Why not say that since murder only happens to less than 1% of the population we shouldn’t have to worry about it. Or not all women are murdered so let’s not complain. This is exactly why sickle cell disease isn’t getting the play of say skin cancer when it is just as dangerous. Yet, only blacks get it and they are ONLY 12% of the population so why worry about it, it won’t affect the majority. Wow, it’s funny how the percentages and the majority only come into play if the problem ONLY happens to blacks. That is what I call racism.

ALso to say that this causes black kids to think there is something wrong with them is also not a good arguement. Many white kids are bombarded with images in the media that portray them as “dumb” “no rhythm” “flighty” “unrealistic” “boring”..and alot of them believe this. so in those regards blacks are no more victims than whites. Also to talk about tv shows with “your culture” . lets analyze that. the steryotypical “black culture ” is composed of the following :down to earth, loud, expressive, full of life, truly human, got beat and rhythm, vocal, altogether just natural humans at their best. WEll these qualities are actually artributes of any lower class people, not just blacks.

OK, you have really overloaded the bullshit meter in my brain. It is unrealistic to think that a couple of images in the media portraying whites as dumb, no rhythm, flighty, unrealistic or boring are going to cause a bunch of problems when they are MORE than offset by the images of whites as the hero, smart, savior, epitome of beauty and any other good that can be shown.

The fact that blacks have been bombarded from day one on this soil with negativity about everything that encompasses their being is a bit more severe than just a couple of jokes. If all I were talking about is a few jokes about blacks being only being good at sports or being love making machines etc. that would be one thing. But, we aren’t just dealing with those stereotypes. We are dealing with an environment that tells us everyday that we are less than. And that is magnified most by trying to make us believe that we can derive all of representations of life from the personification of white people.

Ive seen rich blacks that act like stiffs and are so up in the clouds, and lower class whites with allof the listed charactaristics. these qualities can sometimes be seen in wealthy people. the reason why its commonly seen in blacks is because the majority of blacks are lower class, that is because of the true racism in the past that has made things that way. But i assure you there are just as many poor whites..its just, there are more whites period and the middle class and rich are composed mostly of whites.

Black people are the majority of “low class”? Really, and what exactly do you mean by that? Because the last time I checked there are low class people who have all the money they want. Take Paris Hilton for example. She is a low class skank with money. So, are you basically saying that people who are poor or have less than rich money are low class? How bourgeois of you!

THis country has legally banned racism, however this country is also founded on the sink or swim rule, so those who make it do, nerdy white kids have parents that can promote that so they move on to succeed, while black kids whose parents truly were affected arent as educated, and those who have black parents who dont show sings of affected lives, they give into peer pressure for the “black image”. Ill never forget in highschool when this black kid who lived in an all white hood and was rich was talking about cocain and drive by’s..haha. SO weve establiched that its a sink or swim, doggy dog world.

This country has legally banned murder, theft and rape, yet that hasn’t seemed to stop any of that. But, I should believe that just because we have banned racism it’s now in the past? If that is any part of what you are basing your argument on then not only do you lose but you are also blind to reality. And I agree with you that this is a sink or swim, dog eat dog world. The only problem is that when slavery ended blacks were thrown in the water without the life vests that white people had. And now that we finally worked our way up to a dingy they are sporting yachts.

Well humans will ban together with those who they feel are connected to them or can related to them, if we have people running around trying to point out all the”differences” (which are inconsistant) do you really think that the “different” people are goin to want you in their pack? Its humans no.1 instinct to survive in groups…if you make yourselfe out to be totally different, than whatever”pack” is succeedding will not accept you in because YOU wont let them. So it does make the problem worde when you try to separate yourself cuz youll get just what you want (be separated). If we let go of these illusions of some set difference in mentality between blacks and whites , than people will see eveybody as just that, people. untill that day racism will never end. if you want to help, write about what makes us connected, what makes people people, what we have in common, how color doesnt make a significant differance other than making the world visually beautiful. what i say makes sence. Of course people”see” the visual difference, but i think you know damn well what people mean when the say they “dont see color”.

So, I have to blend in with white people in order for them to accept me in their group? I can’t be me and be accepted in a group of humans because I am human too. That is the problem right now. You and many more just like you feel that in order to get along blacks need to assimilate to white culture and outlook in order to belong. That is ridiculous. There are significant differences between every culture in this world. And it has nothing to do with color and more to do with outlooks and culture. And to tell people that in order to be accepted they need to deny their culture is to say that their culture is less than and isn’t that what we are talking about here right now?

THey mean it doesnt matter to them. to say”oh so you cant tell this is red and this is blue” is just being a smart a–. I’d like to close by saying that I mean no ill..just keeping the convo fresh, thats what blogs are for right?

When a person of any race tells me they don’t see my color is pure bull. We all see differences in each other. How would you feel if I walked up to you and told you that I don’t see your sex? Would you be OK with people walking up to you and talking to you like they would a woman? That is what it boils down to. We are all different and should be accepted and celebrated for who and what we are. I don’t need white people to ignore my race in order to accept me. They should be able to look at me with my race and have no problem. Isn’t that what we should be working towards? Not this phony everyone is a blank colored white person.

And yes let’s always keep the conversation fresh. So don’t take my criticism of you to heart. I don’t dislike you, I don’t like what you say.

Fighting Racism By Ignoring It

ostrich

It is really unfortunate that this type of blog continues to perpetuate racism in our country. You are not doing anything to try to unite the “races”, but you are continuing to divide this country into different classes and types of people. There is no such thing as race. We ALL came from the same two people and the only difference between us all is the cultures and locations we ended up in. But our blood, and our bodies all came from one place. It is my prayer that rather than continue to let people dwell on how sorry they feel for themselves or each other, that these same people would instead rise above this nonsense and fight their way to where they can be. It is much like being a teacher: if you only raise the bar so high, that is the only level your students will achieve, but if you raise the bar higher than you expect the students to reach, they will achieve so much more.

Mommyof1

You know that this type of comment gets posted all too often. I usually don’t pay it any attention because it is usually a waste of time. But, for some reason I am just into wasting my time today. I know that we all would love if things were different and that racism was a thing that only happened in the past. Yet, like I have said a hundred times pointing out the racism and disparity does NOT make me or anyone else the racist. That is just the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

So here we go Mommyof1. Sure, there is no such thing as races only different cultures. I guess the continued subjugation of “cultures” other than European culture or white culture is just a fluke. Or how about the disparity between “cultures”, is that a fluke as well? We can call it whatever you like, race, culture even bananas the end result is that racism, culturism, bananaism or whatever, is real and exists. We will never have unity between the races as long as ostriches such as Mommyof1 continue to bury their heads in the sand trying their damned best to pretend that the disparity doesn’t exist.

And I don’t know what race Mommyof1 is or what she thinks she knows about race but it is ignorant for anyone to just tell students that they need to rise above the so called nonsense if the nonsensical people are standing between them and equality. Don’t they need to deal with the nonsense that presents itself to them on a daily basis? Or are you telling me that ignoring the nonsense, racism, culturism or bananism is going to somehow make it all go away? Because I believe that people are ignoring it day in and day out and it hasn’t stopped.

All kids have to do is fight to reach the level where they want to be, really? The problem with that statement is the fact that schools and teachers in the black area (oops) I mean in the black culture’s areas are ramshackle, run down and completely lacking in everyway possible when compared to the white race or cultures. I guess the black culture kids will just have to fight harder and longer just to get close to the education that the white culture kids get without any struggle at all.

This is disparity Mommyof1 and it isn’t fair. If everyone had to fight for the same prize on a level playing field that would be one thing. But the playing field for these kids looks more like Devils tower in Wyoming. The majority of white culture kids are standing on the nice plateau while the black kids and those whites unlucky enough to be poor are left scaling the cliffs. And the sad thing is only a few will be able to make it to the top not from a lack of trying but there are other obstacles that a lot won’t be able to pass. But Mommyof1 seems to think that everyone can make it if they want it bad enough. It is just like Brotherpeacemaker said, even if every slave on the plantation dressed up in a tuxedo or her fanciest dress, they can’t all be in the master’s big house working. Some one will have to work the fields.

So Mommyof1 may wish to pretend that it is only a matter of hard work but, we have seen the hard working people such as Evon Reid or better yet “Ghetto Dude” who got his masters degree and was still referred to with some stereotypical bullshit because of his race. Now I guess he didn’t make it to his goal because he didn’t fight hard enough to ignore the racism, culturism or bananaism that was being hurled his way while he fought to get where he wanted. How about Oscar Grant who was a hard working father and husband who was fighting to make it for his family before BART police decided to execute him in the subway station? I guess because he didn’t fight at all begging for his life while lying on the ground handcuffed behind his back while the cops pulled the trigger ending his fight.

There are so many more of these people than I have time to list. Yet, somehow Mommyof1 wishes for me to stop talking about it. Stop looking at the blatant systemic racism, the disparity that permeates the very air we breathe. Maybe one more will sink it in for her. How about the sewage sludge solids that the United States Agriculture Department Johns Hopkins University to see whether it reduced high lead levels in the soil, a result of paint chipping off houses. I guess those people didn’t fight hard enough to be able to afford to live in a white culture neighborhood where this wasn’t happening. Or maybe they didn’t fight hard enough to not be victimized by a government agency and hospital who are both supposed to be charged with protecting people, not poisoning them.

So Mommyof1 sometimes pointing out the problem opens some eyes and minds. But all too often you are exactly what I am up against which is an ostrich with its head in the ground trying to tell others how to fight racism by merely denying race or changing its title and ignoring it.
